You rip the disk to a local disk of whatever type and then do your encodes, or at least that is how I do it. Speed of the drive really doesn't come into play unless you are counting rip time onto your encode time, I don't. Is it CPU limited or does the speed of your Blu-ray drive also come into play? What CPU are you using? 12 hours doesn’t seem so bad since you can run it over night. #CAN XMEDIA RECODE ENCODEH.265 MOVIE#Even standalone players are not cheap or easy to come by, and the best players are still $400 video game consoles that not every movie aficionado wants or needs. UHD BD is a different kettle of fish than DVD and BD as the requirements for playing off the disc are quite strict. Just found other things to do with my time. Kind of annoying, but what can you do? My Plex setup is mostly for the wife and kids as I haven't watched a movie since the pandemic started. The 4K stuff I actually have to rip to watch as I don't have a computer with the specific security requirements to watch 4KUltraHD. Just about the only things I rip these days are import live-concert recording blurays that aren't only expensive to replace, but potentially time-consuming to even track down, and you can't always find torrents on the bad places even if you wanted to stoop to that. (And some people are luckier still: they know that their handbrake rip probably wouldn't be as good as the online version code that they got with their set since the dolby vision will be calculated on a per-scene basis and not just on a per-disc basis.) Just be happy that there are some things that still might seem unreasonable to you so you don't have to do them, too. If your LOTR set is, ahem, precious to you, 12 hours is reasonable. Unless your OCD requires you to have your Plex full of four thousand movies that you're unlikely to watch again (or even a first time!) that you personally ripped yourself, rationality should prevail. I think we're at the point where even the "I backup everything" people should relent and only do things that are exceptionally pricey or valuable to them.
